Five-factor method

What a responsible comparison must establish.

Brand names alone are not enough. Two products can look similar in a catalogue and still differ in chemistry, approvals, friction behaviour, compatibility or intended application.

Application

Identify the machine, component, operating duty, environment and maintenance practice.

Fluid type

Confirm whether the requirement is engine oil, hydraulic fluid, gear oil, transmission fluid, grease or another specialist product.

Viscosity or grade

Compare SAE, ISO VG or NLGI grade in the correct context; equal numbers across different systems may not mean the same thing.

Performance requirement

Review the current OEM requirement, service category, industry standard and documented performance claims.

Operating constraints

Consider temperature, load, speed, water, contamination, seals, materials and the consequences of a wrong choice.

Validation

Confirm the candidate against the current LubeMax TDS and request technical review where risk or uncertainty remains.

Before changing products

Plan the changeover, not only the purchase.

A technically plausible alternative can still create problems if the existing lubricant is unknown, incompatible or heavily contaminated.

  • Identify the lubricant currently in service.
  • Check whether mixing is permitted or whether flushing is required.
  • Inspect storage, transfer equipment and labelling.
  • Record baseline condition and operating symptoms.
  • Monitor the equipment after changeover.

Frequently asked questions

Cross-reference questions answered.

Does a cross-reference mean two products are identical?

No. A cross-reference identifies a possible equivalent for technical evaluation. Formulation, formal approvals, compatibility and application limits may differ.

Is matching viscosity enough?

No. Viscosity is only one factor. Fluid type, performance requirement, equipment design and operating conditions must also be considered.

Can two EP 2 greases always be mixed?

No. The NLGI grade does not establish thickener, base-oil or additive compatibility. Check both products and plan the changeover.

Does equivalent API performance mean API approval?

No. LubeMax products do not currently carry API approval, licensing or certification. An API reference describes equivalent performance to the stated specification.

Should I flush equipment before changing products?

That depends on product chemistry, compatibility, contamination and equipment guidance. Technical review may be required.

Can LubeMax cross-reference an OEM-branded fluid?

A possible equivalent can be evaluated when the exact OEM requirement and application are supplied. Some specialist fluids may not have a suitable LubeMax equivalent.

Where can I find the candidate product TDS?

Current documents are available through Technical Resources. If the direct download is not yet listed, request the exact product and grade from the LubeMax technical team.

How can I compare products before the chart is available?

Request a technical review and provide the current product, equipment, viscosity or grade, OEM requirement and operating conditions. The comparison chart will be added after the product relationships have been verified.

What if the current product name is incomplete?

Provide a container photograph, label details, invoice description or the equipment manual. Do not guess the missing grade or specification.
